With the Mid-Autumn Festival around the corner, Jiayuguan's mooncake market is bustling with activity. Supermarkets across the city have set up dedicated mooncake sections featuring diverse flavors, styles and price points to cater to different consumer groups.
During a September 9 visit to multiple supermarkets, our reporters observed ample mooncake supplies with extensive varieties available. Many stores have transformed their entrance areas into "mooncake alleys," where shelves are fully stocked with various flavors and gift boxes, attracting steady streams of customers.
This year's offerings include not only traditional fillings like five-nut and red bean paste, but also innovative new varieties that have become popular alternatives. "Mooncakes symbolize reunion during the Mid-Autumn Festival, representing happiness and good fortune," local resident Zhu Shasha shared. "I buy them every year to share with family and friends."
The market trend this year emphasizes affordability and simplicity. Most individually sold mooncakes come in paper or plastic packaging, priced moderately at 3-5 yuan each. Gift boxes also feature more modest packaging, with the extravagant overpackaged mooncakes that drew public criticism in previous years nowhere to be found. Reasonably priced gift sets ranging from 68 to 128 yuan are now widely available.
