Jiayuguan: the art of stone
Source:        Date:2022-07-08

Located in the northwest of Gansu Province, Jiayuguan is an ancient Silk Road transportation stronghold and the starting point of the western end of the Great Wall of China during the Ming Dynasty. Located in the middle of the Gobi Desert in the northwest, it is rich in stone resources, with Gobi stones, windcutstone all over.

The colourful stones here, with their natural shape and colour, are the best material for making stone art paintings. While drawing on traditional art techniques, Jiayuguan has made full use of Jiayuguan stone resources to create a large number of stone art paintings. The stone art paintings are made of windcutstone on the desert Gobi as the main raw material, based on the prototype and the original colour and lustre, using clever ideas and pure handicraft techniques, set into arts and crafts, ordinary stones, turned into a landscape painting, portrait painting of people, mountains and rivers, etc.

This craft was inscribed on the Jiayuguan Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection List on 29 October 2014 and on the Gansu Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection List on 18 October 2017.
